Sefiani runs for Special Olympics April 2010
A team of seven enthusiastic Sefiani sprinters recently took part in the 2010 Run with the LAW for Special Olympics Australia (SOA) to raise awareness and funds for the organisation in the lead up to the 2010 National Games in Adelaide. SOA, a pro bono client of Sefiani's for the past ten years, provides sporting programmes and training for people with an intellectual disability.
The Sefiani team included Robyn Sefiani, Nick Owens, Hugo Shanahan, Lauren White, Kelly Miller, Roger Christie and Rod Jago. Together, they made the 4.2km journey from Sydney Opera House to the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground as part of the Sydney CBD leg of the torch run which commenced in Cairns on 19 March, following a launch event on the Gold Coast, and will continue until it reaches the host city of Adelaide on 19 April.
The 2010 Run with the LAW fun run aims to promote equality, acceptance and friendship of people with an intellectual disability and law enforcement officials from around Australia have joined athletes and volunteers to carry the 'Flame of Hope' through 40 cities across six states and territories.
"Being part of something like Special Olympics Australia is a truly humbling experience," Robyn Sefiani said. "The athletes have overcome incredible challenges to be where they are today and our whole team was thrilled to support them in their journey towards the National Games in Adelaide."
Following the run, all participants were welcomed at the SCG by host Peter Overton, Her Excellency Marie Bashir, New South Wales Governor, and David Owens, New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner. New South Wales team member Gabrielle Clark shared her thoughts on what it means to be a Special Olympics athlete.
Sefiani is also raising funds for SOA to help athletes get to the Games and donations can be made to the team on the Run with the LAW site right up until the Opening Ceremony on 19 April.
