At Sefiani, work life balance is recognised as an important element in creating a positive and productive workplace culture. Unlike some workplaces, at Sefiani it’s widely accepted that we all have a life outside of work.

As part of this, we’re encouraged to leave work at a reasonable time and look after ourselves, which means seeing friends and family, eating nutritious foods and being physically active.  This is how our corporate touch football team came about earlier in 2011.

This year, Sefiani is also taking part in the Global Corporate Challenge: a health and well-being initiative designed to get office workers moving and walking an average of 10,000 steps per day using a pedometer.

While I have to say we were a pretty fit office to start with, taking on the challenge is a great way for us to encourage each other to keep focused on our health throughout the winter months. It’s also highlighted to us all exactly how sedentary we can be if all we do is sit at a desk all day. According to the Global Corporate Challenge, sedentary jobs and modern conveniences are keeping employees from getting active, with the average white collar worker only taking 3,000 steps a day.

We’re now at the end of our first month of the challenge and our two teams – the Sefiani Steppers and the Sefiani Striders – have been pummelling the footpaths in an effort to increase their daily step average. Despite the recent poor weather both teams have managed to keep their daily average over the 10,000 step mark!

As a result of our increased focus on keeping moving, in addition to our regular fitness routines, most of us are making a conscious effort to make healthier choices.  We’re walking to as many meetings as possible and avoid taking taxis, we try and get out of the office at lunchtime for a walk (even if it’s just around the block), and some of us are getting off the train or bus before our stop and walking the extra distance.  Others are even skipping public transport and walking their way to the office.

Most importantly, we’re becoming increasingly aware of the need to move more and supporting one another’s efforts in the process.

What’s astounded me is just how little we actually walk around in an office environment. Some nights I’ll get home and find I’ve done less than 2,000 steps which really puts the 10,000 target in perspective.

Great initiative and great that it’s raising awareness in an environment where you don’t often consider your activity levels.

As a working mum to an active 3 year old, I can’t believe how many steps I do in a day without trying! I have also made more effort to get off my chair and go and speak to my colleagues rather than using the phone or email. Great initiative Jess! Go Sefiani Steppers!

It’s great we’re doing this in the cold winter months when it’s tempting to be less active. Walking, rather than cabbing to client meetings gets my steps target up nicely.

So good to see the Sefiani team taking wellness so seriously, and well done, Jessica, for initiating the campaign in the company!
